Airsoft is a combat sport in which players eliminate opponents by hitting each other with non-metallic BBs from a compressed air gun which are often full 1:1 scale replica firearms or ¾ scale driven by an electrical powered gearbox as in an AEG (Automatic Electric Gun), or by gas, C02, HPA (High Pressure Air), or by manual spring load.
It is a sport where the physical size or athletic ability of one’s opponent is not the only deciding factor for success in game play. It involves both the physical exertion of moving over various terrains and the mental activity of planning, developing and executing strategies in a team based environment.
Players typically participate in the simulation of military or law enforcement combat MilSim, short for Military Simulation. In MilSim game play, several goals or missions may be assigned to each team, along with a basic load out of supplies (which can include ammunition, rations, explosives such as airsoft versions of claymore mines, airsoft hand grenades, grenade launchers and rifle grenades. While not typical, military simulation games can often last several days, where participants camp overnight during game play.
Game play is not limited to MilSim, many players prefer straight team based elimination, capture the flag or many other types of skirmishes. However, one’s imagination is the only limit for the theme of a game.
Yes and No. Getting hit is part of the game. Fortunately, it's not as bad as one thinks or what airsofters would have you believe. From personal experience, it is like being flicked with a big rubber band.
Airsoft game play employs an honor system whereby the players rely on each others honesty to admit to being hit, because unlike paintballs, airsoft BBs do not leave visible marks on clothing. Players are responsible for calling their own hits, you do not call someone else's. Players who do not uphold the honor and integrity of the game by not calling their hits will be warned by game officials, and if repeated, may be removed from the game. Players who consistently do not call hits are deemed as cheaters and can also be banned from events (Blacklisted).
